A Second UN Charter: Normative Changes from 1945 to the Present
Event Start Date September 19, 2024 9:00 am
This first panel articulates the normative changes from 1945 to today and how they can be reflected in a new UN Charter. From gender equality to the environment, from global majority representation to governance democratization—all against the background of massive shifts in demographics, power dynamics, and the economic footprint of various nations—there are new realities that need to be better reflected in the Charter. Speakers will comment on how the revised Charter treats these new normative realities and offer suggestions on outstanding issues. This panel will look specifically at: gender equality, the environmental/earth system crisis, and the emerging values and principles necessary to underpin stronger levels of international cooperation to confront urgent global challenges.
